What’s Your Go-To Item for Unexpected Emergencies?

If you had to grab just one item in an unexpected emergency—outside of your standard bug-out bag—what would it be? I always lean toward my Lifestraw, but I’m wondering what others consider absolutely essential these days.

Funny, the first thing that popped into my head was my old LED headlamp. Hands-free light makes such a difference, especially if you need to navigate cluttered hallways or outdoors at night. I keep extra batteries stashed with it, too. Amazing how much safer and calmer you feel when you can actually see what you're doing. Anyone else rely on light as much as I do in a pinch?

Funny how we all reach for something different! For me, it’s my sturdy pair of garden gloves—odd, maybe, but hear me out. I’ve run into too many situations where you need to move debris, broken glass, or even just open doors/windows after storms or during a quick exit. Bare hands are so vulnerable, and a pair of thick gloves can save you from nasty cuts or scrapes, especially when you’re rushing. Plus, they double as makeshift potholders if you have to touch something hot, and I’ve even helped people with them in first aid situations (pressure dressing over the glove if nothing else is around). Old habits from nursing, I guess—protect your hands and you can do a whole lot more for yourself and others.

Curious if anyone else has an "odd" essential like that? Not the usual flashlight/water filter stuff, but something you learned was critical through real experience.
