What’s Your Go-To Item for Unexpected Emergencies?

When it comes to those curveballs life throws—power outages, sudden storms, even injuries—I find myself always grabbing my multi-tool first. In my opinion, versatility counts more than anything else when you’re caught off guard. I can mend a broken wire, make a quick splint, or even open jars with stuck lids if my hands are acting up.

I’m curious what others consider non-negotiable for their “grab in the dark” item. Is it a flashlight? Compact first aid kit? Bandana? I keep a small tin of plant salve on me, too, since you never know when you’ll need

If I had to pick just one thing, it’s hands-down my headlamp with fresh batteries. It’s amazing how often the power goes out or you’ve got to check on something outside at night, and you need both hands free. I used to always reach for flashlights, but after fumbling around while trying to fix a leaking pipe or rummage through supplies in the dark, the headlamp just made way more sense—plus, it’s light enough I forget I’m wearing it.

Second close would be a small first aid pouch, but honestly, you can’t treat what you can’t see! There’s also a whistle tied to the headband, just in case I ever need to signal. Your multi-tool idea is practical, though. I’d be interested—does your multi-tool have good scissors? I find so many don’t, and I end up fighting with the thing trying to cut tape or bandages. Anyone found a brand that makes a sturdy one?
