What’s Your Go-To Item in a Bug Out Bag?

If you had to pick just one item in your bug out bag that you absolutely wouldn’t go without, what would it be? For me, it’s always a reliable water filter—so many situations hinge on having access to clean water. I know folks will say fire starter or knife, but I’m curious what others prioritize and why. Anyone have an item that’s a bit unconventional but has proven itself indispensable in the field?

Odd as it sounds, I never go without a sturdy bandana—works for first aid, sun protection, even straining water in a pinch. Anybody else swear by the humble cloth?

Duct tape is my must-have—can fix almost anything, patch gear, even make a sling. Anyone else pack basic repair stuff, or am I just old school?

If I can only choose one, it’s my multitool every time. There’s just so much you can do with one—open cans, fix gear, dig a hole if you have to. It’s not “unconventional,” but it’s so versatile it ends up solving problems I didn’t even think of when packing. Anyone ever use theirs for something really unexpected?

Can’t pack a bag without a solid first aid kit, honestly. I’ve patched up more cuts and blisters than I can count, and even a small one with basics like gauze, tape, and some antiseptic can make all the difference. Surprising how fast a tiny wound can go bad if you’re not ready. Anyone else carry a few meds for allergies or pain, just in case?
