What’s Your Go-To Low-Tech Water Purification Method?

Always curious what people rely on when the filters run out or supplies are scarce. I’ve used the old standby of boiling, but I keep coming back to gravity-fed ceramic filters for regular use since they’re reusable and not too delicate. Has anyone found a particularly reliable DIY method that doesn’t rely on commercial elements? Would love to hear about any natural filtration techniques using things like charcoal from a fire or sand if you've tried them in the field.

Boiling’s always my fallback too, but I’ve actually had decent luck with homemade sand and charcoal filters. Layering river sand, gravel, and charcoal from a clean fire in a plastic bottle works surprisingly well for muddy creek water. It’s slow, but definitely takes the edge off taste and cloudiness before boiling. Has anyone ever tried adding a bit of cloth in there for extra filtering, or is that just overkill?
