What’s Your Go-To Skill for Grid Down Scenarios?

When the lights go out for good, I always fall back on my gardening and food preservation skills first. A solid garden and knowing how to can, dehydrate, ferment, and store food has pulled me through some tough times even when stores went empty after hurricanes. I know a lot of folks focus on firearms or bushcraft, but I’m curious: what’s the ONE skill you rely on most for long-term grid down scenarios? More specifically, what’s gotten you through a real-life event—whether it was a blackout, storm, or other disaster—and why did it work for you?

If I had to pick, I'd say small-scale solar setups—kept my radio going and charged basics during last summer’s outage. Anyone else have luck with DIY power solutions?

For me, it’s always been about water—knowing how to find, filter, and store it safely. When the grid’s down and taps stop running, all the canned goods in the world won’t help if you can’t hydrate or cook. I built up a good rain harvesting system and practiced old-school filter methods, which got us through an ice storm a few years back. Anyone else rely more on water than food as their first priority?
