What’s Your Go-To Skill for Off-Grid Survival?

Fire-making tops my list. No matter where you are, if you can reliably start a fire, you’ve got warmth, water purification, cooking, and signaling covered. I practice using ancient methods—bow drill, flint and steel—because lighters run out eventually. Curious what skills others lean on first when the grid goes down. Are folks focusing more on food procurement, shelter, or something else entirely? Always looking to sharpen my priorities.

For me, it’s definitely foraging—knowing what wild plants are edible, which ones heal, and which will knock you flat if you’re not careful. Garden skills translate, but it’s a whole different thing to walk out and recognize food or medicine growing in the wild. Fire and first aid are up there, but you can stretch rations much further if you can supplement with wild greens or roots, even through lean seasons.

I spend a good chunk of my time practicing plant ID and how to prep them safely, especially since lookalikes can be deadly. Plus, with a bit of herbal know-how, you can make poultices, teas, or salves for minor injuries when med kits run out. Food procurement and shelter seem to tie together for me, too—a good knowledge
