What’s Your Go-To Skill for Off-Grid Survival?

When thinking about true off-grid survival, I always come back to practical medical skills. Knowing how to treat minor wounds, identify infections early, and use basic herbal remedies gives me a sense of confidence, especially if regular medical care is out of reach. Foraging for medicinal plants—not just food—seems just as vital. The ability to recognize yarrow, plantain, and even simple willow bark has proven useful more than once.

Beyond that, I’m curious what skill other folks here prioritize when prepping for long-term grid-down situations. Is it water filtration, firecraft, shelter building, or maybe something less obvious like tool repair or food preservation techniques? There’s only so much room in the brain, and I worry that I’m missing something essential by focusing so much on first aid and wild medicine.

Does anyone have stories about a skill that made the difference
