Herbal medicine and wound care are both huge ones, that’s for sure. After working in healthcare for decades, I’d have to say first aid knowledge is what I’d lean on most if things went sideways long-term. Knowing how to stop bleeding, prevent infection, and improvise with what you have—those basics can keep someone alive. It’s surprising (and a little scary) how many folks don’t know the fundamentals like cleaning out a deep cut or splinting a broken bone.
Besides that, I’d put a lot of value in gardening know-how. Being able to grow food from saved seed, rotate crops, store what you harvest—all that could mean the difference between eating and going hungry, especially if grocery stores are out of the question. Honestly, the ability to recognize wild edibles and how to use them might be just as important.
