What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Everyone stocks the basics, but I rarely hear folks mention extra can openers or manual coffee grinders. What’s the one thing in your stash you think most people forget? Curious what items you all have that fly under the radar but make a big difference.

Really think folks tend to overlook a solid backup for communications—like a simple handheld radio with spare batteries. Most stash plenty of food and water, but being able to get info or reach others can make or break a situation. Also, a notepad and pencil go a long way when digital stuff isn’t an option. Anyone else keep something a little old-school in their kit for when the fancy gear fails?

Definitely think folks skip over something as simple as a sewing kit—tiny but a lifesaver if gear or clothes need quick fixes. Funny how old-fashioned tools like that can end up making the biggest difference.

Can’t count how many times I’ve reached for my headlamp and realized most folks just have flashlights or lanterns. Hands-free lighting’s a game changer, especially if you need both hands for repairs or playing music (guilty as charged). Extra rechargeable batteries too—most people forget those, but they keep everything running when the grid’s out. Anyone else stash solar-powered chargers, or is that just my jazz-loving, off-grid habit?

Couldn’t agree more about the sewing kit—so many folks overlook it, but it’s been a lifesaver for me more than once. It’s not just for clothes, either; I’ve used mine to mend gear bags and even patch up a torn garden glove in a pinch. Just feels good knowing you can repair things instead of tossing them. Does anyone keep extra heavy-duty thread or just basic spools?

People always forget about comfort items—lip balm and a sturdy nail file have saved my sanity more than once. Dry lips or a split nail turns into a real nuisance fast, especially when you’re busy with hands-on work. I also stash a small bar
