What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

Curious what small prep item everyone tends to forget about until they really need it. For me, it’s sturdy gardening gloves—absolutely essential but easy to overlook. What’s the one thing you always seem to forget in your kit or stash?

Duct tape always slips my mind until something’s leaking or tearing, then I’m rummaging around wishing I had a roll handy. It fixes everything from broken buckets to ripped raincoats, but somehow I never remember to restock. Funny how the basics are the things we overlook! Anyone else forget the simple stuff like this?

Can definitely relate—somehow I always forget extra shoelaces, thinking they’re not that important until one breaks. Ever tried using duct tape as a temp fix for laces?

Funny how duct tape always vanishes right when it’s needed most. I end up using it for everything from mending torn books to patching leaky watering cans, yet it never seems to make my list until after the fact. Honestly, I’ve started tucking a mini roll into almost every bag just in case, but I’m sure I’ll still misplace one just when disaster strikes. Anyone else ever tried using those silicone self-fusing tapes as an alternative?

Silicone self-fusing tape’s a real lifesaver for leaky hoses—sticks to itself and holds up better than duct tape in damp spots, in my experience. Have you found it holds up long term, MeadowWhisperer?

Dental floss! Always thinking food and bandages, but floss is tiny, multipurpose and disappears fast. Anyone else use it for more than teeth—like tying plants or making quick repairs?

I’ve used that silicone tape on hoses out in my garden beds and you’re right, it does a better job than duct tape when things are damp or muddy. The stuff clings to itself no matter what, and I’ve even wrapped it around cracked tool handles as a quick fix. I don’t know if I trust it for months on end—mine usually lasts a few weeks before the sun starts to wear it out, but that’s better than nothing if you need time to find a real replacement. It’s also handy for first aid in a pinch if you’re out of bandages—keeps things watertight and protects blisters pretty decently. Funny how something so small can cover so many emergencies. I always stash a roll or two in my go-bag now, especially since duct tape isn’t great with moisture. Anyone ever tried it on anything electrical? Curious if it holds up there or if it’s just for plumbing and patchwork.
