What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

I always see folks focusing on food, water, and ammo, but hardly anyone talks about can openers or extra reading glasses. Both are easy to forget until you need them most. What’s that one small, easily-overlooked item you consistently pack or wish you had? Curious if there are any surprises I haven’t considered yet. Let’s hear your underrated essentials!

Notebooks and pencils, hands down. Folks don’t realize how handy it is to jot down instructions, inventory, or just thoughts if tech fails. I stash a little stack in every go-bag—never failed me yet. Ever tried remembering a complicated seed-planting schedule with nothing written down? Makes me appreciate the humble pencil. Anybody keep those little solar desk calculators too, or is that just me?

Funny how nobody ever mentions sturdy shoelaces. Had a pair snap during a soggy hike once and spent hours improvising with paracord, which sorta worked, but it’s not the same. Now I toss a couple of spares in my kit—they’re tiny and can double

Absolutely agree about pencils and notebooks—it's amazing how quickly you miss them when they're not around. I keep a small notepad in my gardening bag just for scribbling what I plant and when, but hadn’t thought about putting extras in my emergency stash. Solar calculators, now that’s clever!

Clothespins! I always stash a handful in my kits. They take up no space and have a hundred uses—hanging up laundry to dry, closing up bags, making quick repairs to shelters or gear. People forget how tricky it is to keep things off damp ground until they have to, trust me. Does anyone else keep a little sewing kit too, or am I just old-fashioned?
