What’s Your Most Overlooked Prep Item?

It’s easy to focus on food, water, and tools, but I always wonder what everyone forgets until it’s too late. For me, it was a good pair of work gloves—I sliced my hand pretty bad once just collecting kindling. Now I keep extras everywhere. What’s one item you’ve overlooked in your prepping that turned out to be crucial? Would love some ideas for things I might not have thought of yet.

Toothbrushes. Sounds small, but hear me out—staying clean isn’t just about comfort. Learned that the hard way during a longer-than-expected camping trip when my backup broke. Your mouth gets gritty fast, and bad dental hygiene can spiral into bigger issues if help’s not around. Now I toss a few cheap spares in every kit, plus some baking soda (works as toothpaste, deodorant, and can even soothe bug bites).

Another item I overlooked: needle and thread. Not just for patching pants—sewing up a busted backpack or even improvising a splint with fabric and a few stitches makes a world of difference.

Funny how it’s always the simplest things you miss until you don’t have ‘em. Anyone else have a “small but mighty” item that saved your bacon?
