What’s Your Most Overlooked Prepping Essential?

Thinking about all the talk of water, food, and first aid, it got me wondering what important things we might be forgetting. For example, I realized last week that I’d never set aside enough spare glasses—if my main pair broke, I’d be in trouble! It’s not the flashy stuff, but those practical little items that end up mattering when things go sideways. Another thing I didn’t see mentioned often: manual can openers. I’ve got plenty of canned goods, but two openers in the drawer just in case.

Curious what your most overlooked essential is—what’s that one thing you didn’t think of until later, or maybe forgot in your prepping plan altogether? Could be anything: comfort item, tool, hygiene supply, or something else. Would love to hear about those small but crucial things that don’t usually top the lists.

Are there any small items you stock for redundancy but rarely see discussed? Let’s help each other patch

Matches! I realized after reading some survival lists that I had plenty of candles but not nearly enough matches or lighters tucked away. If you’re relying on fire for warmth, cooking, or even comfort, it’s no good if you can’t start one. Now I keep boxes in all the odd drawers and kits. Does anyone have tricks for keeping them dry long-term?
