It’s funny how the little things slip by until you really need them. For me, lip balm is a big one that most people seem to forget about. Chapped lips don’t sound like much, but out in the wind or cold, they can drive you to distraction and even crack and bleed. I always toss a few tubes in my packs now, plus a tin of homemade stuff that works as a hand salve in a pinch. Another overlooked item is safety pins. So simple, but you can use them for repairs, first aid, keeping gear together, or even fishing if you get creative.
Also, don’t underestimate plain bar soap. Not the fancy stuff—old-school, unscented bar soap lasts forever, cleans just about anything, and won’t leak everywhere like liquid soaps do.
