Whats Your Most Overlooked Survival Item?

Most people have the basics covered—water, food, first aid, fire. But there's always something that slips through the cracks until you need it. For me, it was plain cotton bandanas. I started keeping extras in my kits only after using one as a water pre-filter, sun protection, improvised sling, and even for collecting wild edibles. Cheap, light, and endlessly useful, but I almost never see them on checklists.

Curious what others have found themselves missing when it counted. What's the one item you forget about or thought was trivial, only to end up wishing you had it secured in your bag or stash? Could be anything—from hardware store odds and ends to overlooked hygiene solutions. Really interested in hearing what folk in different regions or situations have discovered the hard way, especially if it’s something easily overlooked because it seems “too simple.”

Let's compare notes—might help someone else round out their kit before they need it!

Took me ages to realize how much I relied on pencil and paper for logging info and leaving notes; really easy to forget when you're so used to your phone. Ever actually try waterproof paper?

Surprised how often I’ve ended up needing safety pins—fixing gear, bandaging, even making mosquito netting snug. Anyone else stash weird little bits like that in their kits?

Funny you mention safety pins—I stick a handful in every pack, right alongside a small spool of thread. Those little things have saved my bacon more times than I can count, especially out in the garden when my gloves rip or a button pops. I’d add a small roll of duct tape as another “tiny but mighty” fix-it item; never realized how lost I’d be without it until a leaky raincoat emergency. Anyone have tips for keeping those little odds and ends organized so they’re not just rattling around loose?
