What’s Your Most Underrated Prep Item?

Everyone talks about water filters and knives, but I rarely see anyone mention safety pins. They’re tiny, light, and insanely versatile—fixing gear, first aid, even fishing. What’s your own underrated prep item that doesn’t get enough love?

Dental floss always gets overlooked. That stuff is surprisingly strong and packs down tiny—I've used it for sewing up torn packs, making impromptu clotheslines, and even as emergency cordage. Also, it’s handy for food (tying herbs or bundles) and hygiene, of course. Anyone else use oddball household stuff for repairs or camp chores?

Vaseline gets my vote—so many people overlook it. A tiny tub can be life-saving: fire starter, skin protectant, lip balm, even works for minor cuts or blisters. I’ve even used it to keep zippers sliding in the cold. Does anyone else stash those hotel-sized ones in their kits, or is it just me?
