What’s Your Most Underrated Prep Item?

Reflecting on my stash lately, I keep coming back to plain, old-fashioned baking soda as one of my top underrated prep items. It’s dirt cheap, lasts forever, and does a thousand jobs—cleaning, deodorizing, fire suppression, even simple first aid for bug bites and minor burns. People talk about fancy gear and high-tech gadgets, but something as basic as baking soda can solve a host of problems when resources run thin.

I’m curious—what’s one prep item in your kit you think folks overlook but you’ve found absolutely indispensable? Doesn’t have to be glamorous, just something that pulls its weight in unexpected ways. I’d love some new ideas to round out my own supplies.

Those plastic bags really do end up being a jack-of-all-trades, don't they? I stash mine inside an empty tissue box under the sink—easy to grab and they stay contained instead of taking over the whole cupboard. The makeshift glove idea is clever; I've mostly used them for lining small pails or sorting muddy veggies from the

Clothespins don’t get nearly enough credit. I’ve used them for everything from sealing food bags to hanging up nets over the garden and even as makeshift chip clips when snacks need saving. They’re lightweight, sturdy, and you can toss a fistful in your pack without noticing. Anyone else find themselves using them in oddball ways?
