What’s Your Most Underrated Prepping Skill?

Nobody talks much about basic sewing—fixing gear and clothes could make a huge difference long-term. I’m curious what other skills you all think fly under the radar but might prove crucial when things go sideways. What do you prioritize that most folks overlook?

Knowing how to identify wild plants for food and basic medicine is so overlooked. Folks always stock up on bottled stuff, but the right leaf or root can sometimes do more than a first aid kit, especially for minor things. Being able to grow or forage just what you need gives a kind of peace you can’t buy. Anyone else focus on plant skills, or is that just me being old-fashioned?

Absolutely agree that sewing doesn’t get enough credit, CeruleanScribe. Being able to mend gear or patch clothes really stretches supplies, especially when replacements aren’t an option. I’d say firemaking without matches is another skill people overlook—so many folks rely on lighters, but knowing different natural tinders and methods can save a lot of trouble. It’s those simple, “old” skills that hold up best when things get tough, if you ask me.
