What’s Your Top Item for a 72-Hour Kit?

If I had to pick just one item that I absolutely won’t leave out of a 72-hour kit, it’s a Sawyer Mini water filter. No matter how much you pack, water always runs out faster than you think, and hauling gallons just isn’t practical. With the filter, I can resupply from creeks or rainwater and not worry too much about microbes. For me, it’s peace of mind in a very small package.

Curious what everyone else thinks is non-negotiable for their own kits? Do you prioritize more towards food, shelter, or some kind of tool? I’ve seen a lot of people mention things like multi-tools, tarps, or ways to start a fire in any weather. Would love to hear what your “top item” is and why, especially if you’ve actually had to use your kit during a real emergency.

Also open to suggestions if anyone’s found something that pulls double- or triple-duty but
