What’s Your Top “Must Have” in a Bug Out Bag?

When it comes to building a bug out bag, priorities can really vary person to person, but I’m always curious what folks consider their absolute must-have item. For me, a solid water filtration system comes first. You can improvise a lot, but you’re not going far if you can’t hydrate safely. I like redundancies, so I keep both a Sawyer Mini and some iodine tablets as backup.

Some people seem to put more focus on knives, fire starters, or shelter components, and I get the logic, but water is always my baseline. That said, I’ve noticed a lot of debate around first aid kits, too—what goes in, what gets left out? With my background, I’m tempted to overpack on that front, but space and weight add up quick.

What’s the ONE item that never leaves your bag, no matter how many times you repack or update? Have your priorities shifted over time, or does it always come down to the same piece of gear for you? Would be interested in hearing what folks rank as non-negotiable
