What’s Your Top Must-Have Item for Bug Out Bags?

If you could only pick one item for your bug out bag, what’s the absolute non-negotiable? I’ve been going through my own kit (probably more often than necessary) and keep coming back to a solid water filtration system as my #1. Seems like most other things are either easier to improvise or find, but safe drinking water is just too critical to risk. I’m using a Sawyer Mini right now, but sometimes I wonder if redundancy (like water purification tablets) is a smarter move, or if something like a LifeStraw is better for speed.

Curious to hear what everyone else prioritizes. Is it different for families versus solo preppers? Also, does anyone have recommendations for compact gear that actually holds up long term? I’m looking to upgrade a few key things

Hard to argue with water filtration as rule #1. I lean toward Sawyer Mini too but always toss in a handful of Aquatabs as backup, especially if I’m packing for grandkids or folks who might struggle with using the filter right. Compact trauma kit is a close second for me, even just a few bandages & gloves. Have you found any filters that work well for bigger
