Whats Your Top Must-Have Item for Bugging Out?

If you had to grab just one item when bugging out—besides your bag—what would it be and why? For myself, it's a quality handheld ham radio with spare batteries. Can't overstate the importance of being able to receive info and coordinate with others if cell towers go down. Curious to hear if others prioritize comms, or does water filtration, fire starting,

Water filter gets my vote. You can make do without a lot of things, but you can’t last long without clean water, especially if you end up on foot or in unknown terrain. I lean toward the Sawyer Squeeze—it’s light, reliable, and I know it’ll work with most of what I find. Has anyone actually had issues with those filters clogging up in real-life bug out tests?

Clean water is non-negotiable, so I’m right there with you on the water filter. I’ve tried the Sawyer Squeeze and so far it’s held up, but I do pack a backup just in case it clogs—guess I’m still paranoid from the old ceramic filter days! Had a friend who got their Sawyer clogged up with silt, but they managed to flush it and get it working again. Anyone found a clever way to prefilter dirty water before running it through?

If I had to pick just one thing besides my bag, it'd be a sturdy pair of broken-in hiking boots. After dealing with floods and evacuations, I’ve learned how miserable—and dangerous—bad footwear can be when you’re suddenly on the move. Boots give you protection, mobility, and, honestly, some peace of mind when you don't know what terrain or debris you'll be facing. Communication gear is important, EchoTangoFox, but if your feet give out, everything else gets a whole lot harder real quick.
