Stepping Away from a Dream Job for a New Venture
I once took a leap of faith to land an amazing job in one of the top tech companies. You'd be surprised to know that I'm now taking another leap, this time, by walking away from it.
The Journey to a Prominent Tech Role
Just a few months before I completed my studies at one of the top universities in the country, I got an exciting full-time job offer. The only catch? The job was in California, but my heart yearned to work in the bustling city of New York.
Despite the tough job market, I took a gamble and declined the offer. The gamble paid off. Two months later, I was offered the same role, but this time in New York City. Little did I know, I was about to take an even bigger risk which involved leaving this dream job.
Craving Something Beyond Coding
Working as a software engineer was fulfilling. I learned something new every day and met intelligent individuals from diverse backgrounds. However, the nature of the job was heavily technical. I yearned for something more interactive and creative that didn't involve sitting at my desk all day.
I always had a knack for connecting with people, listening to their life stories, and learning something valuable from them. This passion stimulated the idea of beginning a podcast. While juggling my job, I launched the "0 to 1" podcast with a fellow software engineer.
The Birth of the "0 to 1" Podcast
The title of the show, "0 to 1," was inspired by our journey as software engineers. We believe that the journey from zero - where one starts - to one - where one is today, holds immense value. We felt that people often focus on the destination, overlooking the journey which is filled with lessons and experiences. Our podcast aimed to explore these journeys.
Our underlying goal was not just to create an outlet outside of our day jobs, but also to broaden our connections and interact with individuals in more senior roles.
Networking Through Podcasting
We started by interviewing a variety of individuals - founders, engineers, executives, creators - about their journey from their humble beginnings to their present status. Our podcast quickly gained traction and crossed 100,000 views within the first year. This led us to connect with leaders from large corporations, something we couldn't have imagined without our podcast.
Moving Away from the Comfort Zone
Working in a big tech company, you're just a small part of a massive machine. I desired more autonomy and the ability to see the direct impact of my work. With the current advancements in AI tools, I knew I had to seize this opportunity to bring my ideas to life.
Eventually, I decided to leave my job and focus entirely on building an AI startup, Bounty, with my podcast co-host. Bounty is a platform where companies can post specific tasks and pay only for verified results.
Taking Financial Risks for Greater Rewards
Leaving a steady paycheck to venture into a startup was not an easy decision. At present, we are not generating any revenue and I am relying on a founder's salary, which is significantly less than what I earned before. However, having a podcast with a strong following gives me the confidence to take this leap. In today's world, media and distribution are crucial for a startup's success, and our podcast is the perfect channel for our target audience.
Leaving a secure job is risky, but I believe that if you feel a strong pull towards something, you have to let go of the good to chase the great. The thought of always wondering "what if" was scarier than leaving my job. So, here I am, embracing this new adventure.
