Windows Search just got a faster, cleaner overhaul - how to try it today

A Smoother, Quicker Overhaul for Popular Computer Search Tool

The well-known computer operating system's search tool has been revamped to be simpler, more user-friendly, and quicker. This upgrade is currently accessible within the most recent experimental software build. The expectation is that this updated feature will be available to all users within a few months.

Understanding the Revamped Search Tool

The search function is critical to find files, applications, settings, and other items on your computer. However, the old design of the search window might have felt packed and chaotic. The tech company responsible for the operating system has now improved the search window to be neater, more precise, and more useful.

Presently, the new search window is being introduced to the experimental software build. The updated search window has been significantly streamlined. Rather than showing trending searches and other unnecessary information, it now presents a list of suggested searches. Each item is clearly labeled by name and type, making it easy to identify whether it's an application or a setting. Clicking one of the items either opens the application immediately or takes you directly to the particular setting.

The Changes Made

After conducting a few searches, the next time you open the search window, you'll find a list of your most recent searches for easy access. The layout remains uncluttered, keeping your attention on the search or results you need.

Fortunately, the tech company is also reducing its usual advertising content. The old search window was usually filled with ads for popular apps, AI tools, and other promotions. The revamped window does away with all that. Even better, the most relevant results to your search will now appear before any related products and promotions.

Customizing Your Search

You can also adjust the results to exclude certain items. To do this, go to Settings, choose Privacy and Security, and then click Search. Here, you can decide whether to include internet results and suggestions from the operating system's online store along with the results for local files, folders, apps, and settings.

Even if you decide to include internet searches and online store suggestions, local results will be prioritized when they're more pertinent. However, you don't necessarily want to restrict the results to just local content. In such cases, the search will display files from cloud storage and connected devices when they are a better match.

Smarter and More Accurate Results

Finding the right results also promises to be simpler. Even if you make a typing mistake, add an extra letter, or miss a letter, the search should still be able to find what you're looking for. For instance, if you type "utlook," the Search will understand you meant to type "Outlook." Even a search for just two characters will yield relevant results.

After trying out the new Search, it was found to be a refreshing change from the old look and layout. The search feels quicker and smarter, helping to find items more efficiently.

Testing Out the New Search

To experience the new Search, you need to be using the most recent experimental software build. Even then, the new Search might not appear. On the test build, the feature flag for this specific function had to be enabled. To do this, go to Settings, select Windows Update, and then click on the Insider Program. Select Feature flags, check the one for "Refined Search," and set it to Enabled.

"We've heard your requests for a faster, more relevant, and easier to use search -- whether you're opening an app, finding a file, or changing a setting," the tech company mentioned in their blog post. "As the Search Box is where many people start, we focused on making the results more reliable, easier to read, and more precise before you click."

When can we expect the new Search to be available to all users? That's hard to tell. However, if the updated feature is well-received after the experimental testing, it could be released within the next few months.
