You Wont Believe This Everyday Habit Thats Hurting Your Liver - Heres Why Everyones Worried

Title: An Important Warning: Common Habit May Harm Your Liver

Doctors are raising a red flag about a common thing many of us do daily. This habit could be harmful to our liver, a very important part of our body. The liver helps our body in many ways, over 500 to be exact. One of its main jobs is to filter out bad stuff from our blood. Some livers work slower than others in getting rid of toxins, or harmful substances. This means certain drugs can be too much for even the healthiest livers.

You might be wondering about supplements, those things many of us take every day for good health. Well, doctors have some news about that. They're saying that herbal and dietary supplements could actually hurt your liver. A study in 2017 found that 1 out of 5 cases of liver damage across the U.S. were connected to these supplements.

In fact, a study in 2022 showed that from 1995 to 2020, the number of people who needed a new liver because of supplement use went up by eight times. Robert Grafton was one of those people. He regularly took supplements, but his health took a turn for the worse. He noticed his urine was dark and he felt itchy. These are signs of liver failure.

Robert shared his story with NBC: "I stopped taking everything, thank goodness. If I didn’t know better, if I wasn't in the medical field, I might have thought, ‘Oh, I think I’m getting sick. I need to take some more of these supplements to help me feel better.’" His liver tests showed signs of serious damage. He was scared and thought he might have liver or pancreatic cancer.

After many sleepless nights, doctors told Robert his liver damage was caused by the supplements he was taking. Dr. Dina Halegoua-De Marzio, Robert's doctor, is now warning others about these supplements. She said, "I think people assume these things are safe. The main reason we see people taking these is for good health or to add to their health. I don’t think they realize that there is a real risk here."

It's important to know that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn't check the safety of supplements before they are sold in stores. So, it's up to us to understand the risks.

The FDA shared a warning with NBC News. They said, "Dietary supplements may have strong effects in the body, even if the ingredients come from nature or plants. Bad side effects are more likely if people take a lot of supplements, take different kinds at once, or take supplements instead of or along with their regular medication."

So, next time you reach for a supplement, think about Robert's story. It's important to remember that while supplements can help, they can also harm. Always talk to a doctor before starting any new supplements. And remember, what's important is maintaining a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

What a sobering read. The stats are troubling, but not all that surprising. As a firm believer in natural living, I've always advocated for obtaining nutrients directly from the source: proper meals. Pills and potions can never replace a balanced diet. Do you think there's enough awareness about this in the general public?
