Extra insulation really does make all the difference, especially as you get older or if you’re dealing with unpredictable weather. I’ve used a thin closed-cell foam under my inflatable pads for years—sometimes even just an old exercise mat—when I know temps might dip lower than expected. It’s impressive how just that little layer can keep the chill from seeping up, and it weighs next to nothing. Plus it protects the inflatable from abrasion if you’re setting up on rough ground, which is a nice bonus if you want your gear to last.
That said, it does add to what you’re carrying, so if you’re truly trying to keep a pack ultralight, you have to weigh comfort vs. weight (no pun intended). In a survival situation, though, I’d rather be sure I can get decent rest and stay warm. Sleep is so critical for body repair and mental clarity, especially under stress.
Has anyone found a particular brand of thin foam mat that pairs well with this Yuzonc pad? Some are noisy or slippery, and I’d love to hear real-world recommendations before
