What’s One Prep You Wish You’d Done Sooner?

Looking back, I really wish I’d started building a solid water storage system much earlier. I always figured I could purify what I found, but a local main break a few years ago showed me how limited my options really were. Curious what others

Wish I’d gotten into pressure canning sooner, honestly. Used to just fill the pantry with store-bought stuff or basic jams and pickles, thinking that was “good enough.” But when fresh produce prices spiked and the power flickered for a couple days, really hit me how much I was relying on the grid and grocery stores. Once I finally took the plunge and learned to can soups, beans, and full meals, it was such a weight off my mind—and the food just tastes better when you’ve put it up yourself. The learning curve intimidated me (all that talk about botulism!) but it turned out to be much more doable than I expected.

Had a similar moment with garden rain barrels, too, but the pressure canner wins for me in

That’s such a familiar feeling—thinking you’ll just purify what you can find until you realize how little there is to actually purify when the taps stop running! We had a similar scare during that ice storm a while back, and I was kicking myself for not having more water set aside. I’d always prioritized food and heating, but water kind of snuck up as something I assumed was a given. Now I keep a mix: big barrels outside for garden and cleaning, plus lots of sealed jugs stashed inside for drinking. Honestly, it’s one of those “prep once, sleep better forever” fixes. Ever tried catching rainwater or just sticking to stored tap? I found the rain barrels pull double duty for the garden and even emergency washing. Just have to remember to rotate the drinking water every few months—easy to forget when life gets busy.
