What’s One Prep You Wish You’d Started Sooner?

Should’ve started building my water storage system a decade ago. Rotating supplies and figuring out filtration after the fact is trickier than I thought—especially once you realize how fast potable water can become an issue. For those with experience, did you find any method or container type that made things easier to maintain long

Wish I’d started rainwater collection sooner—those food-grade barrels can be hard to find last minute, and figuring out where to stash them without turning the backyard into a maze took some trial and error. Rotating stored water feels like another full-time job if you let it pile up.

Absolutely relate to the food-grade barrels turning into backyard obstacles—my garden paths became a water barrel labyrinth before I got a handle on organization. Hadn’t considered how much space even just a few can take up, or how much time goes into keeping all that stored water rotated and usable. This last year, I finally put together a little chart with “rotate by” dates and stuck it on my fridge—does wonders for my memory. For hiding the barrels, I tried tucking a couple behind hedges and building a quick pallet screen. Blends them in a bit, and the plants don’t seem to mind.

You’re right about rainwater collection; I put it off thinking it’d be simple to throw together last minute, only to discover everyone else had the same idea after a dry spell. Managed to find a barrel at a local bakery (they get food-grade syrup drums), which was quite a stroke of luck. Curious if you’ve managed to make the draining/cleaning part less of a hassle? That’s where I still have my work cut out for
