What’s Your Top Overlooked Prep Item?

Everyone talks about food, water, and security, but I rarely see folks mention can openers. Manual ones, not electric—they wear out surprisingly fast if you’re using them daily. I stash a couple extras, just in case. What prep item do you think most people forget that could really trip them up in a long-term situation? Let’s hear those overlooked essentials—curious what’s on your lists.

Something I hardly ever see mentioned is needle and thread. Buttons pop off, seams tear, and while duct tape is great for a lot, it’s not the same for repairing clothes or gear long-term. Toss in some extra sturdy needles and strong thread. Surprising how fast basic repairs add up when stores aren’t an option. Has anyone actually tried hand-sewing heavy fabric like canvas in a pinch?

Extra stashes are smart—I think most folks overlook water storage solutions, especially backup ways to purify it. You can have food for weeks, but if the water runs out or gets contaminated, you're in real trouble fast.
