Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term—What Actually Works?

I’ve been rotating water in food-grade barrels for years but always wonder if there’s a better, lower-maintenance method. Anyone had long-term success using stabilized methods (Sodium hypochlorite, UV, etc.) without weird taste or algae? Really want to cut down on unnecessary work and waste.

I’ve had luck with plain bleach (unscented, regular kind) – about 1/4 teaspoon per gallon, seal it up tight in food-grade containers, and I haven’t noticed any weird taste after a year. Kept mine in the basement, out of light, and no algae or cloudiness so far. Never tried UV though—cur

Storing water with a bit of unscented bleach has worked for me too, and I’ve noticed less of that “plastic” taste when I use glass jugs, though they’re heavier and take up more space. I’ve read using stabilized oxygen is another option, but haven’t tried

Bleach does seem to be the tried-and-true option, and I haven’t had odd tastes either as long as I measure it out right. I do wonder, BlueHarborTea, do you store yours in a cool spot? I had one

Glass does taste cleaner, but the weight’s a pain. Tried stabilized oxygen once—didn’t notice a difference from bleach, honestly. Anyone else get a funky aftertaste with it?

Glass jugs really do keep the taste purer, but like you said, they’re just so heavy and need a sturdy shelf! I’ve stuck with food-grade plastic for volume, but always worry about that plastic flavor creeping in. Haven’t tried stabilized oxygen yet either—curious if anyone here has firsthand experience, especially about long-term taste and if it’s really worth the extra price over basic bleach. The fewer times I have to dump and refill, the better, honestly.
