Best Low-Tech Ways to Purify Water in an Emergency?

Looking for reliable, low-tech water purification methods that don't rely on store-bought filters. Have had success with boiling and solar disinfection, but wondering if anyone has firsthand experience with homemade charcoal filters or other old-school techniques? Any advice on materials or tips for field improvisation appreciated.
