Investigation into Antisemitism in Australia Commences
An investigation into the rise and key contributing factors of antisemitism in Australia has been initiated by the nation's highest level of public inquiry, the Federal Commission. This investigation will also focus on the events leading up to an horrendous mass shooting incident in Australia that shocked the nation.
Leadership of the Inquiry
Former High Court Justice, is leading the inquiry. While acknowledging the deep pain and trauma following the mass shooting, she expressed that the work of the commission would play a crucial role in coming to terms with the tragedy. She also emphasized the importance of delivering the report by the anniversary of the attack.
Call for Public Participation
The head of the inquiry also expressed her interest in the experiences of Jewish Australians who have encountered antisemitism, be it at educational institutions, workplaces, or other environments. She assured that anyone could contribute to the investigation through an online submission, and emphasized that no individual would be coerced into providing testimony in public.
The legal team supporting the commission also described the mass shooting as a horrifying event that had caused immense trauma to Jewish Australians. The team proposed to focus on four main areas of investigation including: identification of antisemitic behavior, understanding the causes of antisemitism, examining how law enforcement deals with antisemitism, and investigating the circumstances of the mass shooting - especially the interactions of security and intelligence agencies with the alleged shooter.
Court Proceedings
The alleged shooter, a 24-year-old, appeared in court last week for the first time, facing 59 charges, including 15 counts of murder and one of committing a terrorist attack. Given the ongoing criminal case, the commission has been advised to steer clear of any issues that could potentially impact current and future court proceedings. For this reason, some hearings may possibly be held privately.
Response to the Attacks
In response to the horrifying incident, a review was announced to evaluate the actions of federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies leading up to the attack, and to identify potential improvements. This review, along with a commission called by the local state, were deemed as the best ways to respond to the attacks. However, concerns were raised that a federal inquiry might inadvertently provide a platform for antisemitic hate speech.
Despite initial resistance, a decision was eventually reversed due to persistent appeals by prominent Jewish leaders and several affected families. These calls were also supported by the opposition leader.
