Best Way to Store Water Long-Term—What Actually Works?

Been reviewing my water storage setup again and finding conflicting advice on the best containers and additives for long-term storage. Some swear by food-grade barrels with a bit of unscented bleach, others say it’s unnecessary if you fill them carefully and keep them dark and cool. I’ve even seen folks using glass, which seems risky unless you never plan to move it.

What’s actually stood the test of time for you all? I’m trying to store enough for 6+ months in a basement that stays cool year-round, but I’ve had issues with plastic barrels leaching a bit of taste after a year or two, even the so-called “better” ones

I've had good luck with food-grade barrels and a tiny bit of bleach, but honestly, keeping everything spotless and sealed in a cool, dark place really does most of the work. Taste seems fine even after a year.

That plastic taste drives me a little nuts, too! I switched to glass carboys a while back for my "drink now" stash, and the water always tastes fresh, even after a year. They're heavy and a bit finicky to move,

I hear you on the conflicting advice—personally, I use food-grade barrels with a bit of bleach as a backup, but I’m curious if anyone’s had luck with those new ceramic crocks for larger quantities?

Honestly, the only barrels that haven’t messed with the taste for me are glass-lined or ceramic, but wow, they’re a pain to move—anyone tried repurposed stainless steel milk cans?
