Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term—What Actually Works?

I’ve been researching the best ways to store water long-term (thinking 6 months or more), but seeing a lot of conflicting info out there. Is it better to use those blue barrels or can you just rotate tap water in food-grade totes? Curious if folks here have had actual

Been using those blue food-grade barrels for a couple years now and they’re solid. Make sure you clean them well and store them off concrete (I use old wood pallets). I add a tiny bit of regular bleach for longer storage, just in case—haven’t had issues yet. The totes are fine too, as long as they’re food safe, but I’d trust the barrels more for 6+ months. Does anyone here bother with water preserver drops, or is bleach still the go-to?

Adding a little bleach is what I do too, just regular unscented stuff, not the splashless kind. Those blue barrels are tough, and as long as you keep ‘em away from sunlight and off the ground, they won’t give you trouble. I tried preserver drops once—didn’t notice much difference over bleach honestly. Do you guys ever rotate water more often if you’re storing it in a hot garage, or just stick to the six month mark no matter what?

Cleaning those barrels before filling really does make all the difference—any tiny bit of residue can turn into a science experiment after several months. I’m with you on using pallets to keep them raised; I actually went down a rabbit hole about concrete leaching minerals into plastic over time, and now I just play it safe. Bleach has always worked for me—cheap and easy to replace. I’ve considered the water preserver drops, but honestly, not convinced they do much more unless you’re storing it for several years.
 
Those blue barrels have held up for me way better than food-grade totes, especially if you're pushing past six months. Just a splash of unscented bleach and a good scrub before filling, and I don’t fuss with the expensive preserver drops either. I do rotate a bit sooner if the garage gets real hot in the summer, just to be sure. Anyone gotten weird flavors storing in totes or is that just me?
