Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term Without Chemicals?
Looking for advice on long-term water storage methods that don’t rely on chemical treatments like bleach or AquaTabs. I’m concerned about potential taste, long-term safety, and chemical dependency if supplies run low during a crisis. Currently I’m using BPA-free food grade barrels, storing in a cool, dark spot, and thoroughly cleaning everything before filling.
Some folks suggest boiling before filling, or rotating the supply every 6 months, but that’s kind of a hassle with larger barrels. I’ve read about using UV sterilization before sealing, but not sure how effective that is for home storage. Anybody have real experience with those UV setups or maybe ceramic or stainless steel containers? Is there a way to keep stored water safe for a year or more just by physical means (like vacuum sealing, filtration at source, or deep freezing), or is that wishful thinking?
Would also appreciate any tips on keeping water tasting fresh without adding chemicals. Do some containers or storage spots seem to work better over time? Would love specifics about what’s worked for you, especially over multiple years. Thanks in advance for any insight.
