Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term Without Chemicals?

Looking to store water long-term but really want to avoid bleach or commercial chemical additives. Has anyone had success using only physical methods like filtering, boiling, or UV light? Would love tips on best containers or any tried-and-true techniques for keeping it

Stainless steel or glass containers are my go-to for long-term storage—easy to clean and no plastic taste. I always pre-boil tap water, let it cool completely, then fill up the jars or jugs. Keep them in a cool, dark spot to slow down any algae growth. UV light works in a pinch but isn’t my top choice for big batches—too fiddly. Curious, AquaFern1028, have you considered rainwater collection if you’re open to a bit of extra filtering?

Glass jugs really are solid for keeping water fresh—no weird flavors creeping in over time. I’ve stored boiled tap water in old pickle jars (thoroughly cleaned!) on basement shelves, and it’s stayed clear for months. Rainwater’s tempting but the filtering step always feels like a hassle, especially if you’re worried about roof contaminants. Have you found any easy DIY filters that actually last, or do you stick with store-bought ones?

Boiling and glass jugs seem to work best for me—never had cloudiness or bad smells even after several months. I do swap lids once in a while since metal can get rusty if there’s any moisture left. Tried storing in plastic a few times and just couldn’t get rid of the odd taste. Anyone else noticed glass keeps water tasting better, or is that just me?
