Best Ways to Store Water Long-Term?

Looking to up my game with long-term water storage. I know about using food-grade barrels and storing out of sunlight, but curious what else folks have found works best for keeping water safe months (or even years) down the line. Do most of you rotate your water supply or treat it with anything before storing? I’ve heard mixed things about using bleach versus water tablets. Appreciate any first-hand experiences or methods that have held up over time.

Rotating every 6 months has worked well for me, but I also add about 1/8 teaspoon of regular, unscented bleach per gallon—that’s kept things fresh, even after a year. Always triple check that your barrels are food-grade; I had one that wasn’t and the water tasted off, so now I’m extra careful. I do keep a few water purification tablets on hand, but bleach’s cheaper and hasn’t let me down. Anyone tried those UV water purifiers for stored water? Wondering if they’re worth it for home use.

Rotating every 6-8 months has been my habit, but I use glass carboys for a chunk of my supply—heavy but they don’t leach anything, and the taste stays good if they're in the cool dark. I’ve stuck with bleach at the recommended dose, like MarigoldBreeze said, nothing fancy. Tried purification tablets once, but honestly didn’t like the aftertaste. Anyone storing rainwater? I’ve wondered if it’s really worth the trouble to filter and treat for long-term use.
