Understanding the Spread of a Serious Fungal Infection in the United States

A serious and potentially dangerous fungal infection has been found in more than half of the states across the country this year. Health experts have been tracking this particular germ, which is a type of yeast, as it moves through various medical facilities. While the numbers are concerning, understanding how the fungus behaves can help people understand who is truly at risk.

Tracking the Spread Across the Country

So far this year, cases of this specific fungal infection, known as Candida auris, have been identified in 27 states. By mid-summer, tracking efforts had counted 3,437 active cases. While that number is high, it is actually a notable decrease compared to the same period during the previous year, when there were 4,290 recorded cases. This means there are about 1,000 fewer cases than there were at this point last year.

The infection has not spread evenly across the nation. Some states have seen much higher numbers than others. The three states with the highest number of cases so far are:

  • California: 873 cases
  • Texas: 433 cases
  • Tennessee: 283 cases

Even though the total number of cases continues to climb over time, the speed at which the infection is spreading has actually started to slow down. The overall numbers are still going up each year, but the rate of this yearly increase has become more gradual over the last few years. An increase in the total number of cases does not mean the fungus is spreading faster than it did in the past.

What is This Fungal Threat?

The germ responsible for these concerns is called Candida auris, or C. auris for short. It is a specific type of yeast. Unlike the common yeasts used in baking, this yeast can cause very serious illnesses. It is particularly known for spreading quickly among patients who are already very sick and staying in hospitals, nursing homes, or other long-term healthcare centers.

This fungus can cause a wide variety of health issues. For some patients, it might only cause a mild skin infection. However, for others, it can enter the body and cause severe, life-threatening complications. One of the most dangerous situations occurs when the fungus gets into a patient's bloodstream, which can cause the infection to spread to vital organs.

This yeast is a relatively new discovery in the medical world. Researchers first found it in patients in Korea in the late 1990s. It was later officially identified and named as a brand-new species in Japan in the late 2000s. Since then, medical professionals around the world have been studying how it behaves and how to stop it.

How the Infection Spreads and Who Is at Risk

One of the reasons this fungus is so difficult to control is how easily it can move from person to person. People who are infected can pass the yeast to others. Additionally, people can carry the fungus on their skin or other parts of their body without showing any symptoms of being sick. These individuals can still pass the germ to others without even knowing it.

The fungus is also incredibly tough. It can survive on dry surfaces for long periods of time. This means it can live on common objects in hospital rooms, such as:

  • Doorknobs and cabinet handles
  • Bedrails and medical carts
  • Shared medical equipment

When a healthcare worker or patient touches these contaminated surfaces, the fungus can easily transfer to a new person.

Fortunately, most healthy people do not need to worry about getting sick from this fungus. It rarely affects people who have strong, healthy immune systems. Instead, the fungus poses a threat to specific vulnerable groups, including:

  • People with weakened immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatments or taking medications that lower their body's defenses.
  • Patients in nursing homes or long-term care hospitals who are already fighting other major illnesses.
  • Hospital patients who have medical devices inserted into their bodies, such as breathing tubes, feeding tubes, or urinary catheters. These devices create a direct pathway for the fungus to enter the body.

Why This Fungus Is Hard to Treat

The biggest concern for doctors treating this infection is that many strains of the fungus have become resistant to the medicines designed to kill them. This is known as drug resistance, and it makes treating the infection very complicated.

In a detailed analysis of over 8,000 samples collected during a recent tracking period, researchers discovered alarming patterns of resistance to common antifungal medications:

  • Over 95% of the samples were resistant to fluconazole, which is typically the very first medicine doctors try to use against fungal infections.
  • About 15% of the samples were resistant to another strong prescription antifungal drug called amphotericin B.
  • Only 1% of the samples showed resistance to a class of medications called echinocandins.
  • Fewer than 1% of the samples were resistant to all three of these major classes of antifungal medicines at the same time.

Because resistance to echinocandins is still very rare, doctors are usually able to use this specific class of medication to successfully treat most patients who get sick. However, if the fungus continues to change and becomes resistant to this final line of defense, treating patients will become much more difficult.

Because this fungus often targets people who are already extremely ill, the medical outcomes can be severe. While complete data is still limited, researchers estimate that the mortality rate for patients who develop serious infections from this fungus ranges between 30% and 60%.
