Communities in Syria Plant Trees and Restore Parks

Work Begins in Aleppo

Tree planting, park repairs, neighborhood cleanups, and environmental activities are underway in Aleppo and Homs. Government departments, volunteer groups, community organizations, and local residents are taking part. The work aims to improve local surroundings, add green space, care for plants, and keep public areas clean.

In Aleppo city, the Parks Directorate has started a campaign called “Green Aleppo Returns.” It will continue through April 1, 2027. The campaign is meant to replace trees lost in recent years to heavy cutting and the gathering of wood for fuel. Organizers say bringing back trees can help restore the city’s green areas and appearance.

Planting has taken place in four areas: Saif al-Dawla, al-Sharitiyah, al-Sukkari, and al-Ansari. The work is being carried out with community groups and the city’s environment, parks, and civil defense departments.

Members of Bahar Organization have also joined the effort. They planted along a route from al-Shifaa Roundabout to the 3,000 Apartments Roundabout, passing Clock Tower Square. The group highlighted how residents and organizations can help increase the amount of green space.

More Trees Planned for Azaz

A separate campaign, “Green Azaz Returns,” has begun in Azaz. The city council, district administration, agriculture and parks staff, and volunteer teams are working together. Their goal is to plant more than 2,000 trees at different sites around the area.

The first stage includes about 500 young trees at four locations. These include the public park, Musab bin Hassoun Park, and other gardens. The Green Heart Association is participating alongside several volunteer teams. The campaign is planned to last 15 days.

Parks and Trees in al-Bab

In al-Bab, the city council has launched a project to plant trees, repair parks, and create more green space. Work is now underway at six parks. Crews plan to plant about 500 trees of different kinds, while Civil Defense teams will add another 500 trees.

Cleanups and Environmental Learning

Tree planting and cleanup activities are also taking place in Aleppo city and the areas of Azaz, al-Bab, Afrin, and Manbij. Volunteers are working in several city neighborhoods and across these surrounding areas. Their activities include planting, picking up litter, and helping people learn about environmental care.

The efforts bring together public services and local groups. Their shared goals include cleaner public spaces, healthier plant life, and greater care for natural resources.

Homs Recognizes Sanitation Workers

In Homs, a central event called “Reclaiming Our Environment… Continuing the Story” brought together environmental and community activities. It was held at Sami al-Droubi Hall in the Culture Directorate. The event recognized sanitation workers for their work keeping public places clean and managing waste.

The program also opened a market for environmentally friendly products called “From Our Environment, for Our Environment.” A tree-planting activity took place in the Culture Directorate’s garden.

The Homs Environment Directorate said honoring sanitation workers was a way to recognize their contribution and encourage them to continue. The wider environmental program is scheduled to run for a full week in administrative areas across the governorate.

Homs tourism officials stressed that a clean environment supports tourism. They called for cleaner streets and public facilities, less air pollution, and better protection of water from pollution and neglect.

In the Culture Directorate’s garden, parks staff cleaned and weeded planting beds. They also planted flowers and shrubs suited to the available spaces.

A Shared Effort

National Environment Day is intended to build public awareness and shared responsibility for protecting natural resources. Its goals include reducing pollution and expanding green areas through cooperation among public institutions, individuals, and local communities.

  • Plant trees and protect existing vegetation.
  • Repair parks and care for gardens.
  • Keep streets and public spaces clean.
  • Reduce pollution and protect water resources.
