Attack at Iconic Mexican Pyramids Leaves Multiple Tourists Wounded

A tragic event unfolded as a man opened fire on a crowd of tourists at a historic landmark near Mexico City. The incident resulted in one Canadian visitor's death and injuries to at least thirteen others, according to local authority statements.

The attacker, a 27-year-old Mexican man, was later found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The man was confirmed to be the only perpetrator in the assault, as affirmed by the government. A firearm, a knife, and some ammunition were retrieved from the scene.

Details of the Incident

Seven people sustained gunshot wounds during the horrific incident, while the others were injured in the ensuing chaos. It's believed that many of the injured were hurt when they fell amidst the panic, some even while scaling the ancient pyramids.

Those requiring hospital treatment included six Americans, three Colombians, one Russian, two Brazilians, and one Canadian. The victims' ages ranged from as young as six to as old as 61.

Local media captured footage and images of the horrific scene, showing the gunman standing atop one of the pyramids, firing shots while people took cover. The sound of gunshots echoed in the background of the footage.

About the Location

The pyramids, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a collection of large structures on the outskirts of Mexico City. They were erected by three ancient civilizations and are amongst Mexico's most popular tourist destinations. Last year, the site attracted over 1.8 million international tourists.

Witness Accounts

The attack took place as tourists were exploring the Pyramid of the Moon, one of the major attractions at the site. According to a tour guide present during the incident, many visitors tried to evade the gunfire by lying flat on the ground or descending the pyramid's steps as fast as they could.

Another group of tourists played dead on the pyramid's platform in a terrifying attempt to avoid being targeted. One visitor from Vancouver recounted hearing what she initially thought were firecrackers, before realizing it was gunfire and seeing people rushing down from the pyramid.

She recalled the scene quickly devolving into chaos as people attempted to flee, with one individual tragically falling from the pyramid in their haste to escape.

Response to the Incident

Notably, a local guide mentioned that security scans at the site, previously a routine procedure, had been discontinued. However, in the wake of the incident, the President of Mexico took to social media to express her sorrow, assure an investigation, and communicate with the Canadian Embassy.

Canada's foreign affairs minister also expressed her condolences, describing the event as a "horrific act of gun violence." The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico echoed these sentiments, expressing deep concern and sadness, and pledged support for the ongoing investigation.

In response to the attack, the National Institute of Anthropology and History announced that the archaeological site would remain closed until further notice.

However, in the wake of the incident, the President of Mexico took to social media to express her sorrow, assure an investigation, and communicate with the Canadian Embassy.

Expressing sorrow is important, but actions need to match words. An investigation is what you'd expect, but I worry too often these things get attention for a few days and then fade away. The communication with the Canadian Embassy is the right move, given the loss of their citizen. I hope there’s more follow-through to protect both locals and visitors in the future. It’s just heartbreaking that places meant for wonder and history now feel unsafe.
