How Much Food Should You Really Store for Emergencies?

When it comes to emergency food storage, there’s so much conflicting advice out there. Some say three days is enough, some say a month, and others insist on a full year per person. I’m trying to balance practicality, space, and budget.

What’s the minimum realistic food supply you’d recommend for a household? For context, I’m aiming for sustenance, not luxury, and I want to avoid food fatigue. I’ve got a mix of canned goods, dry staples like beans, rice, pasta, and some freeze dried meals. Rotation is manageable, but space is tight.

Also, does anyone factor in community needs or just household? During a real crisis, sharing feels important, but that means a much bigger stockpile. I’d appreciate any specific formulas you’ve used (calories per day, servings, etc.) and how you decide what counts as “enough.” Not looking for doomsday

For basics, I aim for at least two weeks per person—about 2,000 calories/day, mix of protein, carbs, and veggies. Do you keep snacks or comfort foods in your stash, too?

Snacks and comfort foods are a must in my stash—sometimes morale makes all the difference during tough times. I keep a few chocolate bars, dried fruit, and instant coffee tucked away for exactly that reason. The two-week mark per person feels like a solid baseline, though I admit I stretch a little further if space allows. Have you found certain types of snacks store better than others, PrepperLinda65? I’m always looking for ideas that won’t go stale or turn into a melted mess.
