First, the study focused only on estrogen-only treatments. Doctors usually prescribe this specific type of therapy to women who have had surgery to remove their uterus. Women who still have their uterus typically take a different combination of hormones to prevent other health risks. Therefore, the benefits seen in this study might not apply to women taking other types of hormone therapy.
Second, the timing of the treatment in this study was unusual. The women who were analyzed took the hormone therapy at an average age of about 70. Today, most women who choose to use hormone replacement therapy start much earlier, usually when they first begin menopause in their late 40s or 50s. Because of this age difference, we cannot be sure if younger women would experience the same brain benefits.

Experts also point out that this kind of study can only show a link between hormone therapy and lower dementia risk. It cannot prove that the hormone therapy itself actually caused the lower risk.
