Production Begins for Advanced Camera in Upcoming Smartphone Model
The manufacturing for a new, advanced camera system for the latest high-end smartphone model has kicked into gear. The unique feature of this camera is its variable aperture, a first for this smartphone series.
Previously, the high-end smartphone models have been using a fixed aperture for their primary cameras, which is a lens that stays completely open during photo capturing. However, the introduction of a variable aperture will significantly change this.
What's Different About a Variable Aperture?
A variable aperture in a camera provides more control over how much light enters the sensor. This is particularly useful in varying light conditions. For example, when the lighting is low, the aperture opens wider to let in more light. On the other hand, when the scene is brightly lit, the aperture narrows to prevent overexposure. This technique will also offer users better control over the depth of field in their photos.
How Did We Get Here?
In the past two years, there have been speculations about this smartphone manufacturer incorporating a variable aperture camera in their upcoming models. Industry insiders had suggested that the company was exploring the new technology for their next-generation smartphones and was in talks with parts suppliers.
Now, it appears that the speculations were correct. A Chinese supplier, Sunny Optical, has already begun making the actuators necessary for the functioning of the variable aperture mechanism. The assembly of the camera module is expected to commence in the early summer.
Who's Doing What?
Other collaborators involved in the production process of the camera include LG Innotek, a main camera partner, and module makers such as Cowell. LG Innotek is known to have a key role since they are reportedly getting ready to start production around mid-year. They are also setting up dedicated equipment at their facility in South Korea.
Due to the complexity of the system, LG Innotek is expected to handle a larger portion of the main camera module production. This was also the case when the previous smartphone model was introduced with a folded tetraprism zoom lens, where LG Innotek was the only supplier initially.
Looking Ahead
The new high-end smartphone models with the variable aperture camera are anticipated to be announced sometime around September. Interestingly, the announcement could coincide with the launch of the company's first foldable smartphone.
With the innovative camera system and the introduction of the foldable smartphone, the company is surely going to catch the attention of tech enthusiasts and their customer base. It's safe to say that exciting times are ahead for smartphone technology.
