Astronauts Complete Challenging Space Station Repair Walk but Run Out of Time to Finish

Working in space can be a lot like doing home repairs on Earth. Sometimes, a project that seems straightforward ends up taking much longer than planned. That is exactly what happened during a recent trip outside the international space station, where two astronauts spent hours working as high-tech repair technicians. Although they successfully removed a broken antenna, they ran out of time to install the new one, meaning another trip outside will be needed to finish the job.

The team of space travelers consisted of an American astronaut and a European colleague making her very first trip into the vacuum of space. Together, they spent more than six hours working in their bulky spacesuits. Their main goal was to swap out a large communication dish that had stopped working properly.

The Goal: Fixing a Vital Communication Link

The equipment in question is a special type of antenna known as a Space-to-Ground antenna. This dish is critical because it helps the space station talk to satellites orbiting Earth. These satellites then send information back and forth between the station and flight controllers on the ground.

Trouble started late last year when the antenna lost its ability to track the necessary satellites. This failure made the dish unusable. Thankfully, the space station has a backup antenna that has been handling all the important work in the meantime. This backup has kept high-speed communications running smoothly so the crew can stay in constant contact with the ground control team.

Planners had set aside about six and a half hours for the two space travelers to complete the entire swap. The plan was broken down into a few main steps:

  • Disconnecting the broken antenna from its mount on the station's exterior structure.
  • Securing the old dish so it would not float away during transport.
  • Moving the old antenna to a temporary storage spot.
  • Installing the brand-new replacement antenna in its place.

Unexpected Delays in the Vacuum of Space

While the astronauts successfully detached the broken antenna from its frame, they ran into unexpected difficulties. Space work requires extreme precision, and even small tasks can become very difficult when wearing thick, pressurized spacesuit gloves.

The duo faced delays while trying to unplug the electrical connections attached to the old antenna. They also spent extra time trying to lock down the heavy bolts and pins that secure the large dish assembly. These bolts are necessary to keep the equipment stable while it is being moved to a temporary holding area on the station.

Because of these delays, the clock ran out before they could begin installing the new antenna. Rather than rushing the job, flight controllers decided to play it safe. They instructed the astronauts to securely tie the old antenna to the station's metal truss using safety tethers. The installation of the new antenna was postponed to a future date.

Leaders at the space agency are now looking at the schedule to decide when to finish the work. They might add the task to an upcoming spacewalk that is already scheduled for next week, or they might wait for a later date to send astronauts back outside.

A Historic Day in Space History

Despite not finishing the entire checklist, the mission was still a success and marked several important milestones. The excursion lasted for a total of six hours and 23 minutes. It began in the morning when the two crew members switched their spacesuits over to battery power, and it officially ended when they returned to the airlock and began letting air back into the chamber.

This particular trip outside was the 282nd spacewalk dedicated to building, maintaining, and upgrading the orbital laboratory. It also featured some achievements for both astronauts:

  • Sophie Adenot became the very first French woman to ever perform a spacewalk. She is only the fifth person from France to walk in space, following four male astronauts who came before her: Jean-Loup Chrétien, Jean-Pierre Haigneré, Philippe Perrin, and Thomas Pesquet.
  • Anil Menon completed his second career spacewalk. He previously went outside the station with fellow astronaut Jessica Meir, and he has now spent a total of 12 hours and 50 minutes working in open space.
  • The team successfully managed several unexpected challenges, showing how well their training prepared them for surprises.

After returning safely inside the space station, the astronauts expressed deep appreciation for the support they received. Menon mentioned that although conditions were different than they had anticipated, the backup plans worked well. Adenot shared her excitement about the experience and expressed gratitude for the support team on Earth and the early space explorers who paved the way before her.
