New York Woman Imprisoned in Russia Faces Uncertain Future as Husband Fights for Her Release

From a Happy Couple to a Heart-Wrenching Separation

The story of Harold Jezler and his wife, Olga, is one of love and despair. The couple's joyous union has been marred by Olga's imprisonment in Russia, which has lasted for nearly four years. Harold is desperately trying to get his wife released from the harsh Russian penal system, where she has been suffering.

Olga, a 36-year-old green card holder was detained in Russia following the country's invasion of Ukraine. She was sentenced to ten years in prison on drug-related charges, a verdict seen as unfair by her family, advocacy groups, and certain lawmakers. Her arrest occurred when she was visiting her sister who was undergoing cancer treatment in Russia.

The Plight of an Innocent Woman

Despite being a Russian national, Olga's imprisonment has not been a smooth journey. Her health is deteriorating, and her case does not seem to be making any significant progress. Notably, Olga is the only female detainee with American affiliations who is considered to be held unjustly in Russia.

Harold, her husband, is tirelessly pushing for his wife's release. He is desperate to start a family with Olga. "We can't wait much longer," said Harold, who is 38.

The Journey from a Love Story to a Nightmare

Harold and Olga's love story began in a taco bar in Westchester, New York, in 2017. Olga was studying English on a student visa at the time. Following their first date, Harold couldn't resist Olga's charm and was constantly driving to Brooklyn to see her.

On their second anniversary, Harold proposed to Olga in Washington, D.C., where they took their first trip together as a couple. However, happiness soon turned to sorrow when Olga traveled to Russia in 2022 to assist her sister who was battling breast cancer.

Olga brought with her some supplements that were unavailable in Russia, along with CBD oil, a non-addictive compound derived from the hemp plant. Authorities found the CBD oil when Olga landed in Moscow, leading to her detention and subsequent conviction.

The Dire Situation in Russian Prisons

Olga's imprisonment has been a harrowing experience. Every day, she must endure a hard bed, timed cold showers, incessant chores, and constant surveillance. These conditions have taken a toll on both her physical and mental health.

Despite the bleak situation, Harold remains hopeful, trying to comfort Olga even though he feels powerless to change her circumstances. However, he admitted that repeating the same comforting words over and over again without any real change felt futile.

A Fight for Freedom

Harold is not alone in his quest to free Olga. Two American women who were once imprisoned in Russia have joined him in his fight. They are doing their utmost to draw attention to Olga's case, hoping that the president will intervene and secure her release.

Even in the face of adversity, Harold remains optimistic. He recently traveled to Washington to meet with officials and advocate for his wife's release. While there, he also managed to connect with other families who are facing similar situations.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Harold is determined to keep fighting for his wife until she is free. His hope is that one day soon, they will finally be able to start the family they have been dreaming of.

It’s just heartbreaking to imagine what Olga’s going through, and Harold’s pain must feel endless. The fact that a bottle of CBD oil led to this—especially given the reason for her visit—makes it all the more devastating. Sometimes it really feels like these

It’s truly awful to think she’s stuck in those conditions just over CBD oil—just unimaginable what Harold and Olga are both going through. I hope advocacy groups can actually make a difference here.
