Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi is transferred to a Tehran hospital, her foundation says

A Hospital Move for Nobel Prize Winner, Narges Mohammadi

The esteemed winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi, was recently moved to a hospital in Tehran. This move comes after she had collapsed more than once while in prison. This information comes from the organization that supports her.

From Pleas to Action

For days, her loved ones and other supporters have been expressing their worries about her health. They said it was in a critical state. Her organization announced that her prison sentence had been put on hold for a period, but they didn’t say for how long.

Mohammadi had been in Zanjan prison since the last month of last year. She lost consciousness twice and was first moved to a local hospital at the start of May.

Call for More Than a Suspended Sentence

The organization supporting Mohammadi has released a statement. They believe the suspended sentence isn’t enough. They argue that Mohammadi needs care that is specialized and ongoing. They further stated that it’s crucial that she never has to go back to prison to serve the rest of her 18-year sentence. They have now called for her total freedom and the dropping of all charges against her.

Mohammadi’s lawyer, who is based in Iran, Mostafa Nili, said on a social media platform that the order to move her came after the decision of the Legal Medicine Organization. This organization, appointed by the government, are medical examiners. They said that because of her many illnesses, she needs to continue her treatment outside of the prison, under the care of her own medical team. No comment has yet been made by the Iranian authorities about this situation.

Family Relief and Concern

Mohammadi’s brother, Hamidreza Mohammadi, who lives in Oslo, Norway, has said that medical examiners had suggested moving her to Tehran before. However, this decision was blocked, and he blamed Iran’s intelligence agency for this. He expressed his relief about her move, saying that he can now “breathe lightly”.

Mohammadi, 53, is a well-known activist for human rights and women’s rights. She was given the Nobel Prize in 2023 while she was in prison. She has been imprisoned many times in her career. Her most recent incarceration started after she was taken into custody in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

Declining Health

Her family said that her health had been getting worse while in prison. Part of this was due to the severe beating she received when she was arrested. In March, she had a heart attack. She also has had a blood clot in her lung that needs blood thinners and constant monitoring. She has had this condition since before she was put in prison.

After she was moved to the Zanjan hospital’s cardiac care unit, Mohammadi’s blood pressure has been very unstable, going between extremely low and extremely high. She has been receiving oxygen and is unable to talk, her brother said.

Urgent Appeal for Medical Care

The Nobel committee has urged the Iranian authorities to make sure Mohammadi is transferred to her specialized medical team in Tehran straight away. They said that without this treatment, her life is in danger.
