Nobody ever mentions knot tying beyond a basic square knot, but knowing a few lesser-known knots can save your hide. Anyone else rely on specialized knots for shelter, traps, or repairs? Curious what overlooked skills others swear by when things go sideways.
 
One thing I hardly ever see mentioned is quiet observation—just slowing down and watching. Sounds simple, but being able to read tracks, spot changes in plant growth, or notice weather shifts has helped me avoid trouble more times than any tool in my kit. Folks often rush, but if you pay attention to the little things, you can spot animal trails to water, edible plants, or even catch problems (like a leaking tarp or a critter nosing around your supplies) before they get serious.

Maybe it comes from years of gardening and watching the seasons, but I’d argue that patience and careful noticing are overlooked survival assets. Can’t count how many times I’ve seen someone barreling ahead, missing easy food or making noise when they didn’t have to. Not flashy, but it works.

Anyone else rely on observation skills more than gadgets or gear? Or is it just the former librarian in me that likes to keep quiet and
