Helicopter Collision Results in One Fatality in New Jersey

In a shocking incident in Hammonton, New Jersey, a tragic mid-air collision between two helicopters has resulted in one fatality and left one person critically injured. The unfortunate event happened in the vicinity of Basin Road and North White Horse Pike.

The Unfortunate Event

The collision involved two helicopter models, namely, the Enstrom F-28A and the Enstrom 280C, and took place over the Hammonton Municipal Airport. Each aircraft was manned by only one individual - the pilot. The helicopters were reportedly flying in tandem, their proximity likely being the primary cause of the crash.

Following the collision, one person lost their life, while the other pilot was transported to a nearby hospital with severe and potentially life-threatening injuries.

Eye-witness Accounts

A local resident, Diana Cleuff, recounted the incident, explaining how the helicopters were flying at a lower altitude than usual and were in dangerously close proximity to each other. She recalled her dread at the sight, hoping that their closeness wouldn't result in a collision. However, much to her dismay, the crash occurred shortly after.

Sal Silipino, who owns a cafe near the crash site, revealed that the pilots were often customers at his establishment and were known to enjoy breakfast together. He and other patrons witnessed the helicopters take off before one of them started to spiral downward, shortly followed by the second one.

Another witness, Brian Sherr, was near a store when he heard a woman screaming in horror. He also heard a metallic clank, which he initially dismissed due to the surrounding vehicular noise. However, upon looking up, he noticed one of the helicopters descending in a rotating motion, as if it had lost control of its rudder and tail. He initially thought it was just one helicopter, but to his horror, a second one followed suit. After seeing smoke rise from the crash site, he immediately dialed 911.

Investigation and Aftermath

The names of the deceased and the injured party have not yet been disclosed. As the investigation into the incident continues, local police are urging residents and motorists to steer clear of Basin Road.

An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board is on the way to the crash site. Once the wreckage of both helicopters has been documented, it will be moved to a secure facility for further analysis and evaluation.

As the town comes to grips with this tragic event, more details are expected to be released in the coming days.
