Oregon educator confronted school shooter in attack that killed four people

Educator’s Brave Action Helped Stop Deadly School Attack

A Fast Response During a Terrible Attack

A staff member at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, acted quickly when a teenage gunman opened fire inside the building. Cassidy Schutz, a certified learning specialist, threw her cellphone at the 16-year-old attacker and then fought with him over his shotgun.

The attack happened inside a classroom serving students with special needs. Four people were killed, including three boys and a teacher. Another child and another teacher were injured.

Schutz was praised for confronting the gunman. Her actions may have stopped the attack from causing even more deaths.

Four People Lost Their Lives

The victims included boys who were 5, 8 and 11 years old. A teacher also died in the shooting. Two of the victims have been publicly identified as Rhoam Summer, 5, and Megan Lambert, 25.

The loss has left families, students, school workers and the wider community facing deep grief. Schutz said the event was not simply a news story or something distant from everyday life. It was a real tragedy affecting people she knew and cared about.

She described the sadness as impossible to fully explain. She also said the pain of losing members of the school community would stay with her forever.

A Community Member Confronted the Shooter

As Schutz struggled with the gunman, an armed community member saw what was happening and followed him into the school. The person shot the attacker, killing him while the physical struggle was still taking place.

The quick intervention ended the immediate threat. It also gave other people inside the school a chance to get away from the danger.

  • Four people were killed in the attack.
  • The victims included three boys and one teacher.
  • Another child and a teacher were wounded.
  • The shooter was 16 years old.
  • The attack took place in a special needs classroom.
  • Schutz confronted the gunman before he was killed.

“It All Happened So Fast”

Schutz said the confrontation unfolded in only a short time. She wished there had been more time to protect everyone and change what happened.

She expressed sympathy for the people who died, their families, those who were hurt and everyone who witnessed the attack. She also offered support to the school community as it deals with the emotional damage left behind.

Her response showed both the danger of the situation and the difficult choices made during the attack. Throwing a cellphone at the shooter and trying to take control of the shotgun placed Schutz directly in harm’s way.

The Investigation Continues

The shooting is still being investigated. A reason for the attack has not been made public, and it is not known whether the gunman had a clear motive.

Investigators are working to understand what led to the shooting and how the events unfolded inside the school. The community is also dealing with questions about safety, warning signs and how to protect students and teachers from future violence.

Schutz has asked for privacy while she and others process the tragedy. The school community now faces the difficult work of mourning the people who died, supporting those who were injured and helping students and staff recover from what they experienced.
