Knowing how to communicate without phones gets overlooked too much—radio basics or even simple signaling could save your skin. Anyone here actually practiced with a handheld lately?

Completely agree—knowing how to get a message out when the grid is down gets overlooked all the time. I tried some practice with a little walkie-talkie set with my grandkids last month, and just figuring out the lingo and range made a big difference. Folks tend to forget that batteries don’t last forever either, so learning some low-tech signaling with mirrors or even whistles can come in handy. Has anyone tried Morse code lately, or is that just me showing my age?

That’s a great point—so many folks assume we’ll always have our phones, and that just isn’t realistic. I learned a bit of radio etiquette years ago but admit I’m rusty now. Practicing with those handsets in the backyard could be more valuable than just reading the manual, honestly. Anyone know if there’s a really simple starter radio setup that doesn’t cost a fortune?

Morse code isn't just for “showing your age,” ChrysanthiDream—I’ve been brushing up on the basics myself lately. Never hurts to have a backup method if it all goes pear-shaped. It’s not just nostalgia; even a simple SOS with a flashlight or mirror could make all the difference. And you’re absolutely right about batteries—folks tend to stash gear, forget the batteries, and then find a drawer full of dead ones when it matters most! I started keeping a small solar charger handy, though cloudy days can be tricky.

As for walkie-talkies, practicing with the grandkids is brilliant—turns unfamiliar gadgets into a fun game. I’d add, learning a couple basic signaling methods (colored bandanas, ground symbols) is worth its weight in gold, especially for kids. Anyone tried a good old-fashioned whistle chain with neighbors? Sometimes low-tech works best. Curious what radio models you and EchoTangoFox have found affordable but sturdy—always looking to update my kit a

Really wish more folks talked about water purification beyond just boiling—so many easy mistakes. Has anyone ever tried those DIY sand filter setups with good luck?
